Notes to Self: The Mindset Paradox / by Evan La Ruffa

Mindset is everything.

Of course someone dealing with a hardship doesn’t want to hear that shit. That doesn’t mean it isn’t true, it just means there are more helpful things we can say when folks are dealing with stress, loss, or trauma.

But there certainly is a chicken and an egg here. And this is where the way we’ve approached mindset in the past has a lot to say about the way we deal with it now.

If we lean negative, that is more likely to be the lens.

If we lean positive, that also is more likely to be the lens.

But every time we make a selection about a way to think about and the approach a certain issue, we create a deeper track for that mindset. We create a groove that is harder to deviate from. We develop a tendency.

And make no mistake, it is a choice. We always have a choice…

To be sure it’s all fucked or to see beauty amid the wreckage…

Social cues and empathy aside, we only move in a certain direction after we have made up our mind.

Lindsey and I talked about moving to a country in Latin America for years. It didn’t happen until we made up our minds and started putting the plans into action.

I’m thinking about a piece with tips & insights into the process of moving to another country with your family (let me know if you’re interested)… but in the meantime, I think this one is worth a reminder…

Mindset comes before action. And we get to choose how we see things.

The best part about this is… it’s up to us.

Alas, the mindset paradox.
